Introduction: It Started With a Bottle of Magnesium
It was the late 1980s. I was a few days into my first job in health and wellness, sitting on the floor of a health food store, stocking vitamins. I didn't know anything about nutrition yet. The most I could do was match bottle colors to the right sections and try to keep them in alphabetical order.
A woman walked up and asked if I could grab her some manganese.
I paused. She helped me out: "You know. The mineral."
Confident now, I walked to the right section, picked up a bottle, and handed it to her.
She looked at it and said, "That's not it."
"Actually," I told her, "it's pronounced mag-nesium, not manganese."
She pushed the bottle back into my hand, raised her voice, and said, "People like you shouldn't be working in stores like this."
I put the bottle back on the shelf. Sitting right next to it was a bottle of manganese.
She was right. I didn't know what I was doing, and I was handing out supplements to people who trusted me to know better.
That night I drove to every bookstore I could find and bought almost every nutrition book on the shelves. I read on every break. I read every night when I got home.
A few months later, I had customers who started coming back — people who hadn't felt good in years — telling me how much better they felt. And I remember thinking: this is just a little of what there is to know, and look at the impact it's making. Imagine what's possible if I actually go learn this.
That woman, whoever she was, changed the direction of my life.
What you're reading is what came of that drive.
What came of it was thirty-six years that never really stopped: nutrition certifications, my own nutrition office, massage school, a Doctorate of Chiropractic, my own clinics, thousands of patients, and eventually a journey halfway around the world to study what the West had not taught me. I'll tell you that whole story in the very next chapter, because that's where the framework was actually born — one discovery, one humbling, at a time.
For now, here's all you need going in. Somewhere in those years, I started to notice something that bothered me. Even with the best nutrition, the best structural work, the most carefully built protocols — some patients healed beautifully and some didn't. Same conditions. Same effort. Wildly different outcomes. That question sent me looking. What I eventually found wasn't a contradiction of anything I had learned — it was the missing piece. A whole third dimension that the body responds to as surely as it responds to nutrients and adjustments.
I came home and wove it all together. Structure. Chemistry. Energetics. Three dimensions on one human being.
That was the beginning of what I now call 3D Healing.
Why Most Approaches Fail
You've probably tried a lot of things.
Maybe a few diets. Some supplements. A few practitioners. Maybe surgery. Maybe a meditation app. Maybe a wellness retreat or a juice cleanse or a hormone protocol or all of the above. Some of it helped. Some of it didn't. And somewhere in the back of your mind, you've started to suspect that the problem isn't you.
It isn't.
The conventional medical system tends to work in one dimension at a time. A pharmacist gives you medication. A chiropractor adjusts your structure. A therapist works on your mind. Each of them does their job well, in their lane. The problem is that the body doesn't have lanes.
The body is built in three dimensions and it heals in three dimensions, all at once. The food you eat affects your structure. Your posture affects your digestion. Your emotions affect your inflammation. The relationships you keep affect your hormones. Everything is wired into everything else. When you only address one of those dimensions, you can get partial results. Sometimes you can get dramatic results — for a while. But eventually, the unaddressed dimensions pull the body back to where it was.
This is why so many people end up "trying everything." They're not actually trying everything. They're trying everything one dimension at a time. And the body, which is whole, doesn't fully respond until the approach is whole.
The Three Dimensions
The framework in this book is built around three:
Structure — your physical form. Your spine, your posture, your muscles, your fascia, your joints, the way you move through the world.
Chemistry — your internal environment. Your nutrition, your hormones, your gut microbiome, your inflammation, the raw materials your cells use to do everything they do.
Energetics — your energy. Your nervous system tone, your bioelectric charge, your meridians, your emotions, your relationships, the field you're constantly exchanging with the people and environments around you.
Three dimensions. One body. They don't operate in isolation, and they can't be healed in isolation. Health is the dynamic balance of all three — what I call the Principle of Balance.
Under all three of them sits a core belief I want to say plainly, because everything else rests on it: Your body was born with a Super Power — the ability to heal itself. Every cut closes. Every bone knits. Your gut lining renews itself every few days. The body is, and always has been, in the business of healing itself. What changes over time is the bandwidth the body has to do that work — what I call your Response-Ability. It is not fixed. It can be rebuilt. That is what this book is for.
How to Read This Book
You can read this front to back. Many readers will, and the framework builds on itself with each part deepening what came before.
But you can also use it differently. After the first few chapters, you'll have everything you need to take the Response-Ability Questionnaire at the back of the book — a score in each of the three dimensions plus a total. The dimension with your lowest score is what I call your Weak Link, and it's where the fastest gains are usually waiting. If you want, you can read the part of the book that addresses your Weak Link first, work on it for a few weeks, and then come back to the rest. There is no wrong order.
Throughout the book, you'll find boxed sections — short patient stories, clinical pearls, things to try this week. They are there to add texture without slowing the main thread. Use what helps. Skip what doesn't.
This is not a thirty-day program. It is not a reset, a detox, or a quick fix. It is a framework you will be able to use for the rest of your life. Take your time. Try things. See what your body responds to.
A companion workbook for building your own personalized healing plan is available at 3dhealing.com — designed to help you turn what you read here into an ongoing practice that's yours.
Let's begin.
Chapter 1: A Bridge Between Two Worlds
In my early twenties, while I was studying nutrition night and day, I started to notice something strange about how I was looking at people.
I'd be in a room — at the store, at the gym, walking down the street — and I'd find myself almost looking through the people around me. Not staring, exactly. I learned pretty quickly how to do it without anyone noticing. But studying them. The way they held their shoulders. The way they walked. The way one hip rose a little higher than the other. The way someone's neck pulled forward when they reached for something.
I started seeing people as puppets — except the strings weren't above them. The strings were inside. I could see, in three dimensions, where they moved freely and where they didn't. Where the levers and pulleys were smooth, and where they were fighting each other.
It was the first time the words "three dimensions" started to mean anything specific to me. I didn't have a framework for it yet. I just had eyes that wouldn't stop looking.
So I started studying movement on purpose.
I watched athletes — which ones won, and how they moved when they did. I watched dancers — the strength and control they had in every plane of motion. I was so taken by them that I started dancing myself. Breakdancing, popping, locking. Moving like that taught me something the books couldn't. I could make my body almost robotic when I wanted to — every joint isolated, every angle deliberate — and then dissolve right back into the fluidity of water. Hard. Soft. Sharp. Smooth. All in the same body, on demand.
What I was discovering, before I had words for it, was that the body is built for three-dimensional motion — and that almost nobody uses it that way.
Around that same time, I noticed I couldn't keep my hands off the people I was working with.
I'd started offering fitness training alongside my nutrition consulting — a two-for-one package. But pretty quickly I realized that wasn't what I was really doing. I was guiding bodies. Pushing and pulling on parts that didn't seem to be moving right. Pressing on muscles that felt locked up. My clients were getting what I started to call "a little extra benny" — some free deep tissue thrown in with their workout.
Enough of them told me I had a knack for what they called "rogue bodywork" that I started taking it seriously. More than a few said the same thing: You should look into doing this for a living.
And then a separate phrase started showing up. From client after client. Different people, same words:
I can feel a lot of energy in your hands.
The first time, I shrugged it off. By the tenth, I started paying attention. Because I was feeling something too. While I danced. While I worked out. While I was pressing on someone's shoulder. A kind of warmth. A flow. Something moving that I couldn't see and didn't have a name for.
It was that — more than any book I'd read — that pushed me toward the next thing. I needed to go to massage school. And I needed to start studying more about the body and what this energy business was actually about.
That was the moment my path bent East.
